Reersø - landsbyidyl i særklasse

Reersø was originally an island, separated from the mainland, and today it still occurs that the gap between Reersø and Zealand is flooded. The natural surroundings of Reersø are of course affected by this, and there are many wetlands for example including waders, geese, herons and an interesting flora, as well as protected coastal landscape and cliffs to the west.
Tie your hiking boots and go for a walk around the island - it is a very beautiful walk of about 10 km. (can be reduced), which passes both the House of sheep ‘Fårehuset’, Gravlund stone and the bird tower.

Reersø town exudes an original idyllic village atmosphere– among other things the town includes protected farms worthy of preservation from the 1700s. The farms are located together, as they did in the village community before the relocation.
Reersø Church was built in 1903-04. North of the church, 16 stones are placed around a memorial. After the Danish adscription removal in 1788, 16 farms bought themselves out of Helsinge farm in 1801. The stones were erected in 1901 to commemorate the emancipation, and allude to the 16 farms that were in the village then.
On the corner of the road’s Skansevej and Strandvejen, "The Margrethe stone" marks the 500 year anniversary of Queen Margrethe the 1. 's death. She gave the peasants of Reersø some privileges - including exemption from the tithe and other expenses - as thanks for the hospitality, the islanders showed towards her, when she shipwrecked by Reersø.
The Reersø Museum is located on the road Skansevej. It portrays how a poor working family lived 200 years ago. Certainly worth a visit.

A visit to the harbour is a must, here are still a few pound net fishermen, and there is also a company that treats / processes battery reared salmon from the island Musholm. Last but not least, the island attracts many recreational sailors throughout the summer. Eat lunch at the harbour, where the fish house sells small dishes with fish meatballs and freshly smoked mackerel, or Reersø Inn, which is famous for its newly caught fried eel.
Reersø is known for its unique artistic environment. The galleries and artist’s workshops are open all the year round. A trip to Reersø is a golden opportunity to visit the island's many workshops and galleries containing paintings, graphics, ceramics, glassware, amber art and handicrafts.
Visiting the island’s car museum with American cars can fulfil “the boy within you”.
Look out for the tailless cats on Reersø. There are two subgroups of tailless cats - those who have no tail - "Rumpies" - and those that have a little bit of the tail - "Stumpies". Since the cats are more arrogant than ordinary cats, they are amazing at jumping. These cats have so far survived on Reersø for more than 120 years. Maybe they came to Reersø from the Isle of Man after a shipwreck in Storebælt. There is a stock of 30-40 tailless cats on Reersø
