Fried eel at Reersø Inn

Black herring in Gørlev

Black herring is Gørlev’s very own herring dish. Salted herring are roasted over an open flame. They are washed down with a good snaps and a piece of bread covered with a fatty spread. Black herring is sold at the town square in Gørlev every Saturday throughout the summer.

The tradition of the black herring originates from the days, when steam trains transported sugar beets to the sugar factory in Gørlev. In fact, the stokers ate black herring as a snack - they fried them on a small "bonfire" below the boilers of the steam train.
